Did we walk to the woods?
Did I hold you a hand at a time?
Did I offer a body like mine?
A boy for a woman’s side
Did the trees bend to know
Our half-remembered songs?
Or just the wind help them clatter along
The rest our imagining?
Our coincidence seems too ripe to be accident
But did we just look for schemes amongst the din?
But for that speck of time
I felt a purpose clearly
Brushed your neck
Remembered your body
As a smooth pebble thrown back to a calm sea
As a thing I had held but never known entirely
And the sea seemed to mutter
‘You will never possess her’
But I’ll try to be true to you – my lady
Truer than a tide we know must turn
And though I may not last so long
Though I may not last so long
Never swallow the moon
Never cradle the sky
Still, there is a joy I can hardly bear
To be the one pulling leaves from the mess of you hair
But it comes and goes so secretly
How will I know it will come back to me?
And how do I wait so long?
How do I wait so long?
How do I wait?
Until you say
‘Stop, stop your rambling
There are pleasures still to be had
Our happiness may be fleeting
But we are not memories yet
Let others fret
And ponder why
It can not be held
Like that storm, like that sky
We’ll be as blind to how it goes
As we were blind when it arrived
So for this speck of time…
So for this speck of time…'

The Mules - Ham shank
03:26
|
|||
Kicking off & knocking up and running out &
running round & looking in & looking out
I followed you down, I followed you down
Tonight we'll see a man betrayed
Cos you just can't sit still
Tonight we'll see a man betrayed
Cos you can't keep a deal
Shot right full of holes and wire scraped across his teeth
Tonight we'll see a man betrayed
I think it might be me
Don't you 'brother' me
With your hands around her waist
Don't you' brother' me
Can't you show a little grace?
Pac man cab rank back door ham shank
Can't you wait til then?
Don't you 'brother' me, cos boy
Your skin don't fit your face

Lights - Wave
04:11
|
|||
The sea is calling you again;
he can see it in your breath
on the shore, at night, it sings to you,
like a wrecking ball.
The boats are moored,
the water's high
and the sea is blind, blind, blind
Every wave's a part of you.

Lights - Photo
05:13
|
|||
There are still, somewhere, the photographs-
bleeding in silence in taxi cabs,
stuck on the back of a bedroom door
in some unusual corridor.
Scratching my name on the evening star,
watching you in the back seat of your car
we were not meant to live so long
Toys, by the hundred, in plastic bags-
broken, forgotten and tied in rags,
tied out to dry on the washing line,
left out in winter and tied in lime,
forgotten for years, and decayed away,
stored in your drawers for another day
we were not meant to live so long
Pretty and little and wonderful
Hovering round me, invisible,
lights on the stairways and balcony,
a little incandescent memory
we were not meant to live so long
